A Rant on “Black”


Some people say that black isn’t a color. Black is a color, I say. The void in a homeless child’s heart, or the beautiful black insight I have when I’ve stumbled across something wonderful in the dark. Black is the color of contradiction and discipline, inclusion and exclusion. Unlike blue, which calms, or yellow, which invigorates. Colors have meaning beyond themselves. Their reflections tint everything that hue. 

But black reflects black. Maybe that’s why people say it’s not a color. Black, unlike yellow, can envelope you into its midst, making you warm or cold. Black is the center of all eyes, and the eyes are the windows to the soul. Where exactly does the soul reside? In the blackest human void…
